La acción transcurre en 1993 (década de la película Scream). Noche lluviosa en el Cine Ópera de Montevideo. Unos pocos espectadores ingresan a la gran sala de cine para ver una película de Frankenstein en la función nocturna, mientras la proyección de la película queda a cargo de la joven hija del proyectorista. Pero en la sala hay una psicópata que los irá asesinando...

Al morir la matiné es un film-homenaje al giallo italiano y su sucesor el slasher. En lo personal, confieso que nunca ninguno de los dos (en especial el segundo) me convencieron como cine de "terror". El slasher repite la fórmula de un asesino en serie con objeto punzante y asesinatos truculentos (con mucho gore), con víctimas generalmente jóvenes y en algún trámite sexual o drogón, una "final girl", heroína que enfrenta al monstruo y una dosis de autoconsciencia compartida por sus espectadores . Pero su principal problema para mí es el escaso desarrollo psicológico de todos su personajes (incluido el asesino). Si bien toda película de género se atiene a ciertas reglas, en éste en particular, todo se (me) torna muy previsible.

La película del uruguayo Maximiliano Contenti tiene algunos aciertos y ciertas limitaciones que en este género uno no sabe si atribuirlas al género o a la impericia (por ejemplo, las actuaciones).

En todo momento funciona cierto paralelismo entre la película que se proyecta y lo que va ocurriendo en la sala. Luego de una primera parte un tanto rutinaria y estática, cuando la acción se concentra en un grupo de personajes, la empatía funciona mejor y el interés por la trama se consolida, interés reforzado por la creciente truculencia de las escenas y un asesino que cobra más entidad. Algunas tomas son muy logradas (con homenajes al rojo del giallo) y merecen especial mención los asesinatos, con un gore muy analógico y real.

En definitiva, una película que seguramente disfrutarán los amantes del género y con efectivas dosis de gore.

But in the room there is a psychopath who will assassinate them ...

When the matinee dies is a film-tribute to the Italian giallo and his successor, the slasher. Personally, I confess that neither of the two (especially the second) convinced me as a "horror" cinema. The slasher repeats the formula of a serial killer with a sharp object and gruesome murders (with a lot of gore), with generally young victims and in some sexual or drug process, a "final girl", a heroine who faces the monster and a dose of self-awareness shared by your viewers. But his main problem for me is the poor psychological development of all his characters (including the murderer). While every genre film follows certain rules, in this one in particular, everything becomes (to me) very predictable.

The film by the Uruguayan Maximiliano Contenti has some successes and certain limitations that in this genre one does not know whether to attribute them to the genre or to the inexperience (for example, the performances).

At all times there is a certain parallelism between the film being projected and what is happening in the room. After a somewhat routine and static first part, when the action is concentrated on a group of characters, the empathy works better and the interest in the plot is consolidated, interest reinforced by the increasing truculence of the scenes and a murderer who charges more entity. Some shots are very successful (with tributes to the red giallo) and the murders deserve special mention, with a very analog and real gore.

In short, a film that lovers of the genre will surely enjoy and with an effective dose of gore.
